3 Ways ADESA OBD2 Scans Are Helping Our Customers

In mid-September, we announced the addition of OBD2 emissions codes to the condition reports of vehicles inspected at all ADESA locations. The codes are now directly added from the scan at the point of inspection and displayed on ADESA condition reports as text in a clean and easy to understand table format.

These types of scans and the data they provide aren’t new to the industry, but as John Hammer, chief commercial officer of KAR Global and president of ADESA stated, “the speed, delivery and clarity of how we’re displaying them to our customers is what will make a significant impact.”

The feedback we’ve received from our customers has been extremely positive. Here are three ways the addition of OBD2 scans to ADESA condition reports have been helping both our buyers and sellers.

Faster, More Accurate Condition Reports

With ADESA vehicle inspection specialists now armed with Bluetooth devices for scanning OBD2 codes, they can seamlessly integrate the results directly into the vehicle’s condition report. If the Check Engine Light is on, the condition report will show the corresponding active emissions codes. If the Check Engine Light is off and no OBD2 codes are shown, the condition report will display “no diagnostic codes were reported”.

The codes in turn give both sellers and buyers deeper information to help understand the root cause(s) and magnitude of vehicle issues. That means there’s less time generating high-quality, easy to understand condition reports and more time focusing on the sale.

Enabling Smarter Reconditioning Decisions

With OBD2 information now provided immediately at the point of inspection, sellers can easily make pre-sale reconditioning decisions to repair the cause and clear codes prior to sale, adding value to their vehicle and increasing their potential ROI. On the other side of the transaction, buyers can quickly and confidently determine how much it will cost to recondition the vehicle post-purchase — enabling them to better determine how much they’re willing to pay.

By adding OBD2 scans to our inspections process, we’re ensuring both our buyers and sellers have a faster and clearer path to the key information they need to make smart decisions.

Greater Purchasing Confidence for Buyers

Finally, with the ability to see the clear and concise data OBD2 readings on the condition report, buyers now have greater assurance about the listing’s accuracy. This allows them to bid more confidently on the vehicle.

For sellers, increased buyer confidence leads to more interest and in turn can potentially lead to more bidding activity.

From the recently launched ADESA Purchases Page to our new tool to enhance the reconditioning process for sellers, our goal is to continue to enhance our digital marketplaces and vehicle logistics centers so our customers can be more successful. By doing that, we’ll continue to foster buyer confidence and cultivate a more vibrant marketplace to ensure both our sellers and buyers come out winners on every transaction.
