Used vehicle retail activity often serves as a leading indicator for wholesale activity.


Average Days of Used Vehicle Retail Supply

How long, on average, it takes for a dealer’s complete used vehicle supply to sell down.
Used vehicle retail supply typically averages in the 40-45 day range. Fewer days’ supply may suggest high retail activity and therefore higher wholesale demand. Greater days’ supply may indicate low retail activity and therefore less wholesale dealer demand.

Retail Used Vehicle Sales & Incremental Retail Used Listings Entering the Market

Sales and new listings typically track each other. Think of this as a stable replacement rate. When sales exceed new retail used listings, dealer lots are shrinking. Conversely, when new retail used listings exceed sales, dealers are building inventory.

Aggregate Retail Used Vehicle Inventory Levels vs. prior month

This metric shows the average retail used vehicle inventory on dealers’ lots in a given week versus the prior month. Higher inventory levels may suggest lower wholesale buyer demand while lower inventory levels may signal a period of higher wholesale demand.
