Aggregate Retail Used Vehicle Inventory Levels vs. 2019
This metric shows the average retail used vehicle inventory on dealers’ lots in a given week versus the same week in 2019. Higher inventory levels may suggest lower wholesale buyer demand while lower inventory levels may signal a period of higher wholesale demand.
Retail Used Vehicle Sales & Incremental Retail Used Listings Entering the Market
Sales and new listings typically track each other. Think of this as a stable replacement rate. When sales exceed new retail used listings, dealer lots are shrinking. Conversely, when new retail used listings exceed sales, dealers are building inventory.
Retail Used Vehicle Inventory by Age
A deeper look at inventory levels during calendar year 2020 segmented by age. The difference in age and type of inventory can drive supply availability. One to three year old off-lease, off-fleet and other institutional inventory typically have consistent supply while older retail trade supply responds with overall retail market trends.
Wholesale Buyer Activity
The map and graph below show the level of wholesale purchasing activity versus the same period for 2019 by state and by time period. Positive numbers may indicate a more active and vibrant marketplace versus negative numbers, which may indicate slower wholesale activity.
