James P. Hallett
Jim Hallett has more than 40 years of experience in the automotive industry. As Chairman and CEO, Hallett leads strategic planning for KAR and also oversees the development and implementation of the organization’s objectives and growth strategy. A native of Canada, Hallett joined the company in 1993 as president of ADESA Canada, and in 1996 relocated to Indianapolis to serve as president and CEO of ADESA. He was named CEO of KAR in 2007, and assumed his current role in 2009.
Under Hallett’s leadership, KAR—a global Fortune 1000 company headquartered in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel, Indiana, with more than 10,000 employees across more than 200 operating locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Europe—has seen unprecedented rapid expansion and growth. KAR’s unique end-to-end platform helps the world’s largest automotive manufacturers, financial institutions and dealer groups buy, sell and trade used vehicles—reducing risk, improving transparency and streamlining transactions for customers in more than 80 countries. In 2019, KAR facilitated nearly 3.8 million vehicle transactions valued at approximately $40 billion through its physical, online, and digital/mobile auction marketplaces.
With Hallett at the helm, KAR went public in 2009. Since then, KAR has acquired dozens of companies and strategic assets, including OPENLANE, TradeRev, DRIVIN, STRATIM and CarsOnTheWeb (now ADESA Europe). The architect behind the company’s many strategic investments and acquisitions to better serve customers, Hallett has successfully steered KAR to lead the digital transformation of the auto auction industry while pioneering the use of big data to help customers optimize their auction strategies.
A graduate of Canada’s Algonquin College, Hallett holds a Dealer Management Certification from General Motors University.
